Abstract

This study examines the technical and allocative efficiency of intensive and non-intensive vannamei shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) pond farming through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) grounded in Farrell's theory of productive efficiency and its two major methodological extensions, namely stochastic frontier analysis and data envelopment analysis. Following the PRISMA protocol, seventeen eligible articles from the Google Scholar, Garuda, and Scopus databases (2014–2025), indexed in SINTA and Scopus, were synthesized thematically. The findings show that intensive ponds consistently exhibit higher technical efficiency due to better control of water quality, stocking density, and feed management, whereas their allocative efficiency is more varied and tends to be lower due to the high proportion of feed and energy costs. Non-intensive ponds in several locations even show financial performance that is not significantly different, despite lower productivity. Drawing on social capital theory and common-pool resource institutional theory, this study also identifies capital and technology access gaps, weak farmer-group institutions, and the risk of social inequality as the most strategic community-based issues warranting further research. This study presents a theoretically grounded conceptual framework for future primary research on the community-based efficiency of vannamei shrimp farming businesses in Indonesia.
