Abstract

The utilization of agricultural waste as organic compost has become an environmentally friendly alternative to improve soil fertility and reduce dependence on inorganic fertilizers. Rice straw and green leaf residues are abundant agricultural by-products with considerable potential as organic compost for vegetable cultivation. This study aimed to determine the effect of rice straw compost and green leaf compost on the growth and yield of pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) cultivated under a raised bed system and to identify the most effective compost treatment. The experiment was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of four treatments: control (without compost), rice straw compost, green leaf compost, and a combination of rice straw compost and green leaf compost. Each treatment was replicated three times. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, root length, and fresh weight at 35 days after transplanting. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and significant differences among treatments were further evaluated using the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% significance level. The results showed that compost application significantly improved the growth and yield of pak choi. The combined application of rice straw compost and green leaf compost consistently produced the best performance for all observed growth and yield parameters compared with single compost applications and the control treatment. The study concludes that combining rice straw compost and green leaf compost is an effective organic fertilization strategy for enhancing pak choi growth and productivity under a raised bed cultivation system while promoting sustainable utilization of agricultural waste.
