Discussing about suffixes forming adjective, we use the theory of Francis Nelson (1958) and Bauer Laurie (1983) to analyze data. In accomplishing this study, we firsly, read some books, then collected the data from the opinion columns of The Jakarta Post from December 1"-31, 2001. Later we classifid them according to the suffix they contain, and analyzed them accordingly. The researchers used English as a source language and Indonesian as target language. The objective of the study is to find out how English hyperbolic expressions are translated into Indonesian. In conducting this research, the researchers followed these procedures. Firstly, the researchers formulated the problem. Secondly, the researchers built theoretical framework. Thirdly, the researchers collected the data and classified the data based on kinds of hyperbole. Lastly, the researchers examined the data in Indonesian whether hyperbole in English are translated into hyperbole in Indonesian or not. After analyzing the data, the researchers came into a conclusion that English hyperboles are translated into Indonesian in some ways: (i) hyperboles are translated with hyperboles by maintaining the original words in source language (find the proper word equivalents), (ii) hyperboles are t ranslated with hyperboles but the original word in source language are not maintained but are substituted with new word in target language, and (iii) hyperboles are translated non-figuratively. As the result, the writer finds that all of the data are translated into hyperbole.
2024-07-27T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Muse: Jurnal of Arthttps://ejournal.ust.ac.id/index.php/MUSE/article/view/3958ONTOLOGICAL DIMENSION OF UNDERSTANDING IN GADAMER’S HERMENEUTIC2024-07-27T12:23:49+02:00Anselmus Chartino Adebonargurning02@gmail.com
The focus point of hermeneutic philosophy is “the art of understanding”. Hermeneutic philosophers pay special attention to the interpretation and application of texts. Hans George Gadamer, as one of the figures in hermeneutic philosophy, emphasized that “understanding” has a circular structure. In order for people to understand, there must be pre-understanding. “Understanding” is impossible without language because it is a fundamental human attitude, which also relate with past texts. “Understanding” essentially has ontological relevance. The ontological dimension shows an existential relationship between words and objects. Looking for a word is actually nothing more than looking for a word that seems to be attached to an object. This word is a statement of the complete identity of reality. Words or language come from reality. The formulation “the conversation that we ourselve are” sounds similar with Rene Descartes' “cogito ergo sum”. If Cortesio’s res cogitans is thought, then for Gadamer it is language and conversation. The reason of Gadamer is actually very classic, that no thought can exist outside of words and language
2024-07-27T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Muse: Jurnal of Arthttps://ejournal.ust.ac.id/index.php/MUSE/article/view/3959A DECONSTRUCTIVE READING OF MITCH ALBOM’S TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE2024-07-27T12:29:41+02:00Pioro Benevolent LariestoPioro_lariesto@ust.ac.id
The novel Tuesdays with Morrie conveys people way to value life even though in bitterness and sadness. This is library research where all data are taken from the library and internet browsing. This research applies the deconstructive Theory proposed by Jacquess Derrida in order to find the Binary Opposition and the hierarchy of meanings contained within the novel. It is concluded that from the two binary opposition that has been analysed that there is a fluidity and instability of system of meaning in the novel.
2024-07-27T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Muse: Jurnal of Arthttps://ejournal.ust.ac.id/index.php/MUSE/article/view/3960THE DARK SIDES OF SCIENCE IN KAZUO ISHIGURO NEVER LET ME GO2024-07-27T12:34:33+02:00Rosa Maria Simamorarosa_simamora@ust.ac.idTasiana Indun Nainggolanrosasimamora1967@gmail.com
This thesis describes the dark sides of science in Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go. In this novel, Ishiguro clearly presents Kathy, the novel’s main character, as a representation of people who become the victims of the dark sides of science by Madame, Miss Lucy, and Miss Emily end in dying. This study uses narrative qualitative research and applies literary sociology theory by Wellek and Warren saying that the work of literature, the purpose as well as the things that are implicit in the work itself and that are related to social problems. The analysis is focused on alienation and exploitation as the dark sides of science and technology. In this study, there are two concepts of alienation. The people who alienate others are represented by Madame, Miss Lucy, and Miss Emily towards the characters Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy. The people who are alienated are represented by Kathy, Ruth, and Tommy who are placed by figures as representatives of the government or companies who agree with the development of science and technology, who are cloned in a Hailsham dormitory with strict rules that are lonely and hopeless. Exploitation in this study is represented by the characters Kathy H, Ruth and Tommy carried out by Madame, Miss Lucy, and Miss Emily who act as if they are educating and looking after the clones even though they are representatives of the authorities to ensure that the clones are in a healthy condition until time for donation. The clones, Kathy H, Ruth, and Tommy are exploited by strange and strict rules, hopeless, cruel, and are not allowed to become parents because the most important thing is their body organs without regard for their humanity. The study concludes that Kazuo Ishiguro in Never Let Me Go conveys the dangerous dark side of science to people i.e. alienation, and exploitation.
2024-07-27T00:00:00+02:00Copyright (c) 2024 Muse: Jurnal of Art
